ETFO members tell their stories
Bill 115 has already taken a devastating toll on educators. Hundreds of ETFO members have responded to our call to tell us how Bill 115 has affected them, their families and their students. Here is a selection of those stories. Check back frequently, as more are added every week.
When you ask teachers to look at “how good we have it”, please realize that when we go into teaching, the reasons are NEVER about the money! If I wanted to get rich, I definitely would not have chosen teaching as a career.
In August 2012 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I had surgery on Sept. 10 and missed 7.5 days of school. I have now returned, but am facing additional absences for radiation and/or chemo.
I am depressed to think that I may be ending my teaching career under these negative circumstances but I do not have the heart to continue in my field for much longer.
These are scary times. People need to wake up! A government cannot be allowed to take away the right to collective bargaining
I am also a mother of two young children. I feel vulnerable in terms of my ability to take sick days because of the many demands at work and home.
A member will use all her sick days in appointments to monitor a chronic health condition, leaving nothing for other illnesses.
A member wonders why she should bother returning to work from family leave.
A member recovering from hip surgery had to return to work before she was ready and had used all her sick days by mid-September.
A member had enough accumulated sick days to recover from brain surgery, but they were snatched away by Bill 115.
Having injured a hip, a member will run out of sick days before the year is out.
Sick with the flu, this member could not afford to stay home and probably infected others as a result.
It’s hard enough working full time with a disabled daughter without the added financial pressures and loss of sick leave, as well as the uncertainty for the future.
After waiting six years to get a job, this teacher has been hit hard in many areas by Bill 115.
Hit with cancer, hit with a pay cut and hit with loss of banked sick days.
